What to Do in Berlin Besides Museums: 9 Fun Alternatives ๐ŸŒ†โœจ

Travel guide to Berlin. 24 hours in Berlin. Scenic view of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate with people gathering at sunset. See a lot in 24 hour.

As a traveler who doesn’t LOVE museums, I get so annoyed when people only offer museum recommendations. Berlin is famous for its museums but not everyone wants to spend their trip wandering through galleries. Luckily, the city has many fun alternatives. So what to do in Berlin besides museums? Here are 10 things to do that are NOT museums that will make you fall in love with one of my favorite European cities.

The East Side Gallery is art so it’s kind of like a museum. However, it’s quite unique, involving history, and a fun activity to do especially in nice weather. The East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall. It is now covered in colorful murals and fun to stroll. Donโ€™t forget to snap a photo in front of the famous โ€œFraternal Kissโ€ mural.

2. Chill Out at Tempelhofer Feld ๐Ÿ›น๐ŸŒณ

Once an airport, Tempelhofer Feld is now a nice park where people like to picnic, bike, rollerblade, etc. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and soak up the atmosphere. Itโ€™s one of the most unique parks in Europe.

3. Go Thrifting in Mauerpark ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Sundays at Mauerpark are a Berlin tradition. The flea market here is packed with unique vintage clothes, quirky antiques, and delicious street food stalls. Even if you donโ€™t buy anything, it’s really fun to walk through, see the unique items and see street performers. I don’t generally buy souvenirs but i’ve bought quite a few unique treasures at this flea market.

4. Cruise the Spree River ๐Ÿšค

For a totally different perspective of Berlin, hop on a Spree River boat cruise. Sure it might be really “touristy” but youโ€™ll get to float past landmarks like the Reichstag and Berlin Cathedral without walking til your feet hurt. Some cruises even offer dinner or cocktails on board.

5. Dive Into Berlinโ€™s Food Scene ๐Ÿ”๐ŸฅŸ๐ŸŒฑ

Let’s talk about one of the best fun alternatives to museums- eating. Berlin is one of the best cities in Europe for food… especially vegan food. Head to street food markets like Markthalle Neun for international eats. Donโ€™t miss a vegan dรถner kebab or a plant-based currywurst. 6. Experience the Berlin Nightlife ๐ŸŒƒ

Do you enjoy nightlife? Like a nice rooftop bar or cozy beer garden? Berlin gives NYC a run for its money, because as soon as the sun sets, the Berlin nightlife comes alive. If techno all-nighters arenโ€™t your thing, try a cocktail lounge in Neukรถlln or a jazz bar in Kreuzberg.

7. Day Trip to Potsdam ๐Ÿš†๐ŸŒณ

Potsdam is the perfect half or full day trip from Berlin. It’s full of palaces, lakes, and gardens yet only a short train ride away. If you find yourself in Berlin for at least a few days, I highly recommend visiting Potsdam.

8. Relax at a Lakeside Beach ๐Ÿ–๏ธ

Yes, Berlin has beaches! Well not real ones, just the lake kind. Wannsee or Mรผggelsee are popular with locals and you can rent a paddleboard, picnic, or just catch some sun.

9. Step Into History at the Berlin Wall Memorial ๐Ÿงฑ

Okay, this one edges close to being a โ€œmuseum,โ€ but itโ€™s outdoors and incredibly powerful. The Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse gives you a sense of what life was like when the city was divided. The preserved watchtower and Wall sections are sobering but important for understanding Berlin beyond the glass cases of a museum.

10. Climb the Reichstag Dome ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Germanyโ€™s parliament building isnโ€™t just for politics. The glass dome at the top is free and one of the best view of Berlin! Just remember to book in advance online.
